Those in the profession know that “Teacher Talk Time”, often shortened to TTT means that time spent clarifying, explaining, inputting or however you want to describe it.
Here, it simply means talking about teaching, and my teaching to be more precise.
I’m trying to be adventurous in my classes. As a new teacher, I have to find out what works best for me and my students in class.
I have many, many days where I feel nothing is changing and I’m not getting better and better. I long for the day where I feel more confident and able to do it.
Every week I try new things. Last week I tried a bit of drama and a bit of dictoglossing and using poetry.
When all goes pear-shaped (as it often does!) I comfort myself with the knowledge that I am experimental.
When do you get good at this?

Well that’s a BIG question! What is good? Now I’m no expert and I’m not pretending to have answers, but…
For me, a big part what makes a good teacher is thinking about teaching, something which you clearly do a lot of, so 10 points to you! Good teachers reflect on their teaching and use their experience and intellectual knowledge to initiate action that allows for progress in their teaching. An important part of this is sharing the experience with others, which you are doing on this blog and perhaps in your staff room.
I recognise how you feel. I used to try anything and everything, partly because it interested and motivated me rather than because I thought it was good for the students. I suppose there is a danger in this, but because you mention that you are trying out what’s best for ‘me and my students’ I think you’re on the right track.
I think it’s important to bear in mind that things often go pear-shaped for everyone, even experienced teachers. The important thing is how you react. Don’t dismiss an idea first time, reflect on it, adapt it and try it again.
Finally, take your time. All good teachers are always trying to get better and because you obviously care, I’m sure you’re good already!
